5 favorites of fall: tricks and treats

dressing my buddy up in funny costumes and toting him around town for candy on halloween night is definitely something i look forward to this time of year! he's been some doosy of some characters...a bumble bee (ssqqquueee! baby max!), a jester, a knight, batman, a skele, a cowboy, and this year....a ninja? boys! i try to make his costumes for tricks and treats but he's bucking the system this year. he found a ninja costume at the store that made his heart skip a beat...dragons and ying yangs and all...and mama couldn't refuse.
(but between you and me...i'm making him a back up homemade costume anyways..haha)

growing up, we didn't celebrate halloween. and i never particularity felt deprived...my mom would usually take us out for a movie or have a "harvest party" on trick or treat night. but it's always been something i've been fascinated by, always seeming just a little bit forbidden. and something i knew for sure i would want to experience through my little ones when i was an adult!

although a harvest party sounds pretty good too!
so let me live vicariously through all of your childhoods! what was your favorite halloween costume when you were little?

  2. That knight costume is awesome! Love all of these. It's great that you have pictures of all of his costumes... I'm working on a post of my past costumes and the few years that I have no photo for are such a bummer! It's funny to go through all of the pictures and see what I was into at the time. You should dress up too, though!

  5. I went as the "PMS Fairy" one year and won the costume contest at my high school.

LOVE Max's knight costume (and the photo you took). Been reading your blog for a couple months now, and have decided it's simply one of the best things on the internet. So awesome! <3

  7. Well, to be honest, I can't remember any of my costumes, however, my kiddos have been some pretty amazing characters for Halloween. (My son's have been The Mask, a tadpole, a stegasaurus,Robin Hood, a Gorilla, and this year Zorro; My daughter has been Belle, an angel, cupid, the Mad Hatter and this year, a sock monkey) My mother-in-law makes their costumes and I cherish each and every one because of the love that she pours into them. Your Max will cherish all the wonderful costumes you made him also. Happy Trick or Treat!!!

  11. Such a great post - I love seeing the progression of his age and personality!

I'm so glad to hear that someone else didn't trick or treat as a child either. I also must live vicariously through others memories.

  12. so cute. as for me and my siblings, whenever we found a costume we liked, we'd run with it as far as we could. i was pocahontus for kindergarten through 2nd grade and then princess jasmine, in the wedding outfit for the next 3 years. my little sister is probably still gonna be pooh bear, at 16 years old. ha. kidding :) but really. once you find the one you love, why stray? ha

  13. How cute! All of them!

My favorite halloween costume was not that clever at all, but it was me as a witch! I was about 5 or 6 and my mom made me a great black flowy witch's dress and of course a hat. Come to think of it, it was probably the only time I ever willingly wore a hat as a child. I loved it! And my mom got the cutest picture of me, that til the day he died, my grandpa had hanging in his office.

  14. Bumble Bee Max makes my heart ache....all of his past costumes are amazing though!

In my household growing up Halloween was basically just "the Devil's holiday" but we were still allowed to dress up in Non-Scary costumes to go Trick or Treating. I think I was a cheerleader four year in a row. Sheesh.

I'm a little more loose about the Halloween thing now that I have my own boys. :)

  15. I generally had no interesting costumes. I'm sure you have this issue too in Ohio, but in Maine you have to layer your costumes with like 3 jackets and tights and pants, so the effect generally gets lost unless it's a warm year. I remember wearing an awesome princess dress one year when I was 7...but that's about it. haha!

  16. Max was an absolutely adorable bumblebee. I was a bumblebee last year because I was a preschool teacher and we were called the Bumblebees. So I made my costume and it was amazing. All day the kids kept telling me, "You're fat, Miss Francesca" because I'd stuffed the bottom.

My favorite costumes from childhood were a homemade Belle Costume in shiny gold fabric, with my little sister in shiny silver matching dress as Cinderella.

  17. I don't know if it's my favorite, but definitely the most memorable was when I was in kindergarten. I was the little mermaid of course. (This is said ironically since if you saw me you probably wouldn't peg me for Ariel's twin.) And mom let me wear real lipstick! She had a lovely green taffeta type skirt that looked sort of like scales but I decided it needed to be tied at the ankles so it was a real tail. Needless to say I fell to the ground a lot that day.

  18. baby max is so cute!

my memory is terrible, because i really cannot recall a halloween costume from my youth. isn't that tragic? i better go look at some old pictures to remember.

  19. My Mom made all of our costumes. She refused to buy any after the year my sister went to one house, got scared and refused to go to anymore. My favorite was either my Dorothy or Poodle girl costume. Although if I had pictures to remember it by, I am pretty sure Pocahontas would have been a favorite too.

This was my Poodle Girl costume

  20. my favorite was when my dad wrapped me in toilet paper to be a mummy. my dad was always really good at coming up with groovy costumes, when he had us on a beggar's night. my all-time favorite was when he dressed up my little sister as aunt jemima, complete with baloon boobs and blackface. she wasn't even old enough to say "trick or treat," but she was a hit at every house.
