making a house a home

thank you again to cassie from the veda house for having our little home over this week.
here are a few more photos for you...(our bedroom and baby's room are still underway...or i guess the whole house is really..haha...but who wants to see an empty room, an unmade bed, and our dirty clothes all strewn about?) hopefully someday i'll have a full house tour to show!

a few of you asked for some house tips, and while i'm certainly not an expert, i do have a few keys to live by....
we don't live on the nicest street or in the best neighborhood. we're surrounded by double-wides and foreclosures and a crazy cat lady house...but that hasn't stopped us from seeing potential and beauty and a sense of humor in our home.  things are respected but nothing is too precious to dance or play toys on...and almost everything can be thrown in the wash or tossed out with minor heartache. things move, walls get painted and painted some more, dogs shed and hamsters roam and there are little boy toys on almost every shelf in every room.
a house is personal...and making it yours, and his, and theirs, is so important to making it a home.

whether you're renting, have an apartment, or one room to call your own while living with your parents...you and your space deserve a little love and personality...a place to deep breathe in and inspire.
even if you are just passing through.

that's the idea anyway...tell that to our bedroom!
now to go and try to scrub the little boy crud off the playroom couch...

happy wednesday, friends!

  2. That's so true: one needs to LIVE in a house, all those scratches, stains and chips make the memories

  3. i never knew white walls could be so fresh and clean and pretty. even with a little boy running around ;) these photos and your wise advice on house to home transitions is just what i needed right now as the boyfriend & i start the 'together' place hunt. it's the people in the home that make it what it is, not just the four walls.

  4. I love that your house is so personal, unique and warm--and that is what I aim for my flat to be like and I am getting here slowly but surely.

  5. i've loved this feature so much. my house is totally white, blank as a canvas, just the way that my mom likes it, but it tends to look sterile. your place? so much warmer. love it.

  14. I love your tips on making a house (or apartment, or room...) and home! I live in an apartment and it's hard sometimes not to be able to paint but I have come up with little things I can do to make it more homey.

  20. I love getting a peek inside others homes. There is always inspiration to be found - and your home is absolutely no exception! Thank you for letting us all take a peek into your home. I'm personally glad you don't have every single room in your house completely and perfectly finished - it just makes you that more real. ;)

  25. Oh, dear Katie, I imagine being in the same fifth grade class as you. We sit near each other at the same cluster of tables. Every day you pull out your cute little pencil box that has been decorated with tiny buttons and jewels that you gathered from your grandma's craft basket. My eyes are fastened to your sweet delicately manicured hands with envy as you pull out your bright rainbow boutique of prick-my-finger-perfectly sharpened pencils. Oh fine day! You glance my way and ask if I'd like to borrow one. Why, yes! Please! And can we later hold hands and giggle together as we frolick outside for recess?

    Love your blog!
Seriously -- can we be friends?! (if the above Dear Katie did not freak you out!)
    xoxo,
    Sarah

  28. Your house is adorable, I love how it reflects your personality perfectly & it does seems so so cozy! I know you probably have wonders up your sleeve for the baby's room, can't wait to see it :)

When I read the "cat lady" part I just laughed out loud because we have one next to us who comes with a bonus trailer. I really appreciate your point of view & how you choose to see the world... how a work in progress can be such a work of art already. ♥

  31. I absolutely agree with you about showing your space some loving even if you are just passing though! That has always been my feeling, which is exactly why I had a vintage crystal chandelier hanging in my 500 sq ft studio. There is just so much to love about your home! So much eye candy! From the wood beam, great wrought iron, bright and open color pallet and those amazing kitchen shelves, you have great taste!
