hiding place

when i got back from my trip last week, matt and max had a surprise!
and not just any surprise...a whopper of one! when we pulled up to the house i noticed our old and outdated (not to mention broken) porch light had been replaced with a shiny and snappy new one, all lit up...and i was beside myself! i thought that was the end of the surprises, but it was just the tip.
all throughout the house, "i's" had been dotted and "t's" crossed. doors finally painted and ceiling holes patched...lights that never worked were working and everything smelled fresh and new. we've been living in a halfway finished house for almost a year now...and in one week almost everything was fixed. my two boys just might be the best at good surprises and at loving on their gal.

the happiest surprise by far was my reading loft! it's finished and ready for books and a comfy bed!
matt had a beautiful metal railing installed and built bookshelves. he had lights put up and spruced up the old wood attic floors (i cherish the mismatched boards).
it's a dream. really and truly, a dream.
the truth is, time alone...finding a place to escape...has always been important to me. baby katie would sneak away and hide under the fern plant in the living room or curl up in that white chair to read and have time alone. as i got older, i would climb trees to hide away from the world...and that's exactly why matt built me this space. it's my white chair...my fern plant...my apple tree.

and not a moment's thought goes by without me feeling overwhelmingly loved and completely understood. he gets me. and i'm one lucky lady.

if you don't hear from me again, you'll know where to find me.

see max run

max is a rough and tumble kind of guy.
he always seems to gravitate toward dirt and trouble and a frenetic pace...it's one of his finer qualities. but something new has sneaked in along with his dirty little fingers and 10 layers of costumes on at one time...our guy has become a reader. real and true. it's as if a whole new world has opened up to him...he sees words and sentences to read everywhere he goes. he takes his time...he sounds them out...he's patient and eager. it's taken a while to get here...but it's the best thing in the world to watch. one minute he's down with the dog, rolling and barking...the next it's quiet and he's tucked away upstairs.
these kinds of things are the best parts of growing up. and it's even better experiencing it the second time around through max. watching confidence build him up bit by bit. my, oh, my.
so now we need whole new sets of books...chapter books and series and books that can take him away...books to sneak and read with a flashlight under sheets well after bedtime! any suggestions for a rough and tumble 7 year old reader?

pocket novel

today was the kind of day for being tucked away in the corner of your favorite bookstore...just the right amount of clouds and drizzle. my favorite place in dayton is bonnetts. it's scattered with kitschy action figures and piles of used books and vintage magazines (the old playboys make me laugh every time). i went searching for inspiration for work and ended up stuck in the paperback western isle. it was nice getting carried up and lost for an afternoon.
hoping your wednesday was a fine one!

sunbathing and books

happy friday, friends!
i've been spending the day hanging out in my office, soaking up every bit of sun pouring through the windows, and wondering if it's possible to build a huge window bench so i can curl up and cat nap in the sun.
a girl can dream, can't she?
the winter weather has given us lots of excuses for curling up and hunkering down.
a good book is a must.
max is in full fledged reading mode, and somehow he prefers vintage reader books over most others. although some of the verbiage is funny to him...overcoats and automobiles and trousers. love!
we've got a little collection building. he particularly likes the cowboy books and the grimm's fairy tales because they are morbid and cruel. haha. perfect bedtime stories.
geesh.
p.s. we're on our 4th snow day here and i fear max has officially lost his mind.
he's turned into this odd slap-stick comedian with the facial expressions and the voices and the sassy come-backs.
he has a wild look in his eyes. he's lost his will to get dressed.

maybe no scary fairy tale stories for him tonight.
here's to a wonderful weekend!
