old marrieds

i'm a firm believer in taking myself out on dates. alone time is essential to this mama, and luckily max's daddy days give me the opportunity.
this week's date was spent rummaging through vintage stores, a milkshake and people watching, and a bag of pistachios along with my crossword puzzle book.
hhmmm. i might need to spice up this relationship...i'm starting to act like i've been with myself for 27 years.

tomorrow's date: a matinee of my fair lady and laundry...but i'll wear heals. and maybe show a little leg.

up where the air is clear

tonight we flew kites in the breeziest sunset.
more of that please!
the colors of summer are fading to all shades of green around here. a sure sign that he is making his plans to hit the old dusty trail. that and school supplies are out....a not so subtle hint. poor summer. he's become that house guest and probably is feeling like we're all yawning and looking at our nonexistent watches and waiting for him to realize he's outworn his welcome.
well, not to buddy and me! we've got things to check off of our list before kindergarten hits.

p.s. summer is a "he" to me.
we were courting, but after these past few bum weeks in july...and me threatening him a time or two because of the heat...well, now i think we're just casual acquaintances.

changes

i guess i took an accidental break from blogging this month. ack! the past few weeks have been a whirlwind of change and indecision...but also plenty of stepping forward and carrying on. being an adult certainly has its drawbacks sometimes.
i've spent much of my time away in a little bit of a daze...but still finding time for karaoke for matt's birthday and ice cream mustache outings with my little guy.
after all, summer is almost over and there is no use sitting around with a sourpuss face.
p.s. max and i chopped our hair off.
his out of necessity to retrieve a burr or thistle thing stuck like gum....mine out of defiance and need for a reinvention. i've never been precious about my hair until i held the scissors up to it today. that was a clear sign to me that it had to go!
although now i can't stop cutting. oh dear.

superheroes

max's superhero birthday bash went without a hitch...just as long as you don't ask matt about my 11th hour birthday party planning sass. it wasn't pretty...suffices to say, there were lots of raised eyebrow glances exchanged back and forth and questions as to whether he might be afraid of me (the answer was no). haha. i blame it on the heat.

anyways....

the party was a hit!
the weather was beautiful and max's little friends were sweet as pie in their capes and pizza sauce faces. matt strewed balloons all about and we made sure there was plenty of ice cream to go around (but not enough silverware for some reason...i ate mine with a fork.).

i made control panels for explosions and whatnot for all the little ones out of jello boxes and bendy straws. i found the tutorial here. there was also a beautiful cardboard box metropolis (that caused some of the sass) that was supposed to be used for knocking down and building back up.
i think i threw the word "gingerly" around when explaining to max how to do it. 6 year old boys don't do anything gingerly. the city was destroyed in 10 seconds. flat. literally...they flattened the boxes.
regardless, it was a real fine time!
max asked me last night how many days until he's 7.
oh dear.

6 is the new 30

today my little man turns 6!
i've been a big sad sack of nostalgia over all of this...and am trying to not give max a complex about aging. haha. ack! 6 has become my scary age for him...like 30 or 40 is for me. there is a certain maturity that comes with leaving 5 in your dust...like not wanting to wear sandals anymore because someone said they looked silly (but still for god knows why will insist on wearing socks and flip flops together)...or shutting the door when getting dressed and starting to construct "keep out" signs.

but today i am full of genuine excitement for him!
my tiny guy is a young man. he is the greatest joy of my life and the butter to my bread.

we had a picnic breakfast this morning for him with 6 donuts and 6 candles and plenty of smooching.
max's party is saturday...and i am knee deep in sewing superhero capes and hot gluing my fingers together.
oh how i love a good party!
happy birthday, my lover!
i love ya, i love ya, love ya, love, i love ya. 10x52!

usa! usa!

i hope everyone had a lovely holiday weekend.
ours was stuffed with family and sweet friends and firecrackers and lots of hot.
we had my parents and sisters and tiny little nephews and niece over to our place for lunch sunday. the heat once again brought out the worst in me (see picture below). water balloons and limeade were the best medicine.

we went to visit fireworks two nights in a row. it was a fine thing...especially hearing both john phillips sousa and miley cyrus in the same fireworks show medley.
ain't that america!

americana

there isn't anything quite as american as a summer night out with friends eating hot dogs and rootbeer floats, riding bikes, and dancing to big band music in the middle of a blocked street with your guy.

oh, and cheese fries. definitely cheese fries.

happy 4th of july, friends!
i've got some sparklers and confetti poppers to stock up on...
